A great opportunity. It's a privilege to have work judged by the great Donal Ryan. He is so lauded for his novels but 'A Slanting of The Sun' is a stunning short story collection. One of my favourite.

It sure is a stunning collection, and I'll never forget Donal reading his story Tommy & Moon at the UL Spring Forward programme in March this year. A real privilege to have him read a full story in person, and of course Donal was most generous in his answers during the Q&A that followed. He's a gentleman to his core, and a true master of the craft!

The word limit is frustrating. So basically flash fiction only.

I'm not sure I understand. Flash would normally be up to 1,000 words. We allow anywhere between 750 and 2,000 words.

I appreciate that. But that's barely a third as long as a story by, say, Elizabeth Strout, William Trevor, or TC Boyle, or the stories published in journals like Ploughshares or McSweeney's.

Sure, but circa 2,000 words is a common constraint in competitions. Anyway, it's the rule for this competition!

John, I did the MA in Creative Writing at UL. 2,000 words is a very acceptable limit for a short story in a competition or journal I have stories of different lengths and submit according to the rules of any competition. You'll find a home for your longer works. There are many.
